Derived from the Pinus family, Southern Yellow Pine consists of four major species that are nearly indistinguishable from one another, even under microscopic examination. Together, they represent the most commercially important timber species in the Southeastern United States.
Pinus taeda
Regarded as the most commercially important tree in the Southeastern US. It is native to the region spanning from central Texas east to Florida, and north to Delaware and southern New Jersey.
According to U.S. Forest Service surveys, the Loblolly Pine is the second-most common species of tree in the United States, providing a highly reliable and sustainable yield for the timber industry.
Pinus palustris
A cultural symbol of the Southern United States, found along the coastal plain from East Texas to southern Maryland, extending into Florida.
A majestic species that reaches a height of 30–35 m (98–115 ft) and a diameter of 0.7 m (28 in). Historically, before extensive logging, they reportedly grew up to 47 m (154 ft) with massive 1.2 m (47 in) diameters.
Pinus echinata
Possessing the largest range of the southern US yellow pines, it spans from New York State south to Florida, and west to Texas. Reaches heights of 20–30 meters (65–100 ft) with trunk diameters of 0.5–0.9 meters.
Highly variable in form, it is a primary source of wood pulp, plywood veneer, and heavy lumber for a variety of structural uses.
Pinus elliottii
Named after its habitat ("slashes" or swampy grounds), this fast-growing pine is known for its distinct conical shape and glossy red-brown cones.
It reaches heights of 18–30 m (59–98 ft) with trunk diameters of 0.6–0.8 m. Its slender, needle-like leaves grow in clusters of two or three, providing excellent straight timber.
